Shani (Saturn) is the son of Surya (Sun) and Chhaya (Shadow). When Shani was born, his gaze fell upon his father's charioteer, who immediately fell from the chariot. Even Surya, his own father, was afflicted by Shani's powerful gaze.
Shani is the great judge among planets, delivering justice based on one's karma. His period of Sade Sati (7.5 years when Saturn transits over one's Moon sign) is both feared and respected as a period of karmic reckoning and spiritual growth.
